My Client-Finding Advice to You Based on 33 Years of Experience

 

NOTE: You'll Discover The Most Effective Way to Find Clients ...

 

Look ... if you're an ambitious copywriter, there are many ways to find clients. Here are my thoughts about the effectiveness (or otherwise) of the methods that I have used … and others have used.

Ultimately, there’s only ONE method I would recommend for finding clients. It’s the method that I use and it’s the most powerful. It’s also one of the easiest ways to find clients. Very few people use this method, yet it worked for David Ogilvy, Clayton Makepeace, Gary Bencivenga, and many other copywriters.

Before getting into this method, let’s look at the other methods. Some methods must be avoided, others can work somewhat well but, quite frankly, I'm not a big fan of any of them. There's only one way I really like and recommend.

 

THE UGLY

 

Method #1. Upwork, Fiverr, People Per Hour, and Other “Commodity” Sites.

HOW THIS WORKS. People who are looking for creative help visit these sites. You set up profiles and start to bid on work.

POSITIVES … NONE.

NEGATIVES. You set up a profile. You bid on assignments. You get to work with clients who are ONLY interested in one thing: PAYING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. So you quickly become a commodity. And with our ‘friends’ at Fiverr and other sites, you get paid almost nothing for writing copy. Avoid this method at all costs.

 

Method #2. Google AdWords and Pay Per Click.

HOW THIS WORKS. You pay to rank above the organic search results or you even advertise on the display ad networks.

POSITIVES … You CAN find decent leads and get awesome exposure. You can also get leads sent straight to your email inbox through Google Alerts.

NEGATIVES. I like Google Alerts and I found a great client using this method. But it’s passive and you have to spend HOURS trolling through websites and classifieds looking for leads. Google AdWords is a powerful tool but you MUST know what you’re doing or you can quickly spend well over $20,000 for mediocre leads. To make the most of AdWords, you need to hire a consultant … an expensive consultant. Display ads are a good fit for business-to-consumer businesses looking for tens of thousands of customers. I’m not convinced it’s a great method for creative freelancers.

 

Method #3. Major Job Sites Like Monster and Career Builder.

HOW THIS WORKS. You place your resume on these sites and/or you respond to ads.

POSITIVES … Recruiters who are looking for copywriters will often find you through these sites. This can lead to decent temporary gigs – sometimes.

NEGATIVES. You’re going to have to deal with a recruiter who is simply trying to place as many people in jobs as quickly as possible. The gig might be good. The gig might be terrible. I tell everyone to make sure they have an up-to-date and keyword optimized resume on all the big job sites. But … again … it’s PASSIVE and you’re at the mercy of a head hunter.

 

Method #4. Trolling Sites Like Warrior Forum.

HOW THIS WORKS. You cruise around message boards populated by Internet marketers and other direct response marketers.

POSITIVES … You’ll find some potential clients.

NEGATIVES.. These sites are like the Wild Wild West. Anything can happen. You’ll find plenty of potential clients with NO money … but big reputations.

 

Method #5. The Latest and Greatest Websites Making Big-Time Promises They Can’t Possibly Keep.

HOW THIS WORKS. Just about every week – it seems – someone sets up a website trying to link clients to creative types. Some sites are rudimentary. Others are slick.

POSITIVES … You might find a client or two … and you might get some SEO juice through links to your site.

NEGATIVES. These sites are notoriously unreliable. You can also waste several hours setting up elaborate profiles nobody will ever see.

 

Method #6. Crowdsourcing.

HOW THIS WORKS. Several websites provide potential clients with a service called “crowdsourcing.” You basically produce creative work for free … hoping the client chooses your work over the work of others. You are NEVER paid for the work that’s not chosen.

POSITIVES … NONE.

NEGATIVES. You could literally spend your entire career producing work nobody will pay for. The people who run crowdsourcing sites are the lowest form of pond scum who will happily rip off ambitious creative types. Avoid crowdsourcing at all costs.

 

Method #7. Classifieds and Aggregators.

HOW THIS WORKS. People who need copy will post classified ads on sites like Craigslist. Certain sites automatically collect all these classifieds and list them in a daily email.

POSITIVES … There’s a lot of opportunity.

NEGATIVES. A few of the potential clients are strong. But the vast majority of these classifieds are from clients who don’t really know what they’re doing. It can also be extremely competitive.

 

Method #8. Advertising in Trade Journals.

HOW THIS WORKS. You place ads – large or small – in trade publications.

POSITIVES … You’ll see plenty of creatives trying this approach and it can be somewhat targeted. You can also measure the results.

NEGATIVES. You might get some good leads but you’ll get plenty of bad ones. Plus it can be expensive depending on the publication, the size of the ad, and the frequency. You’ll spend anywhere from $150 to $1,000 a week.

 

Method #9. Writing a Book.

HOW THIS WORKS. To establish yourself as an expert, you can write and publish a book about your field of expertise.

POSITIVES … Clients are almost always impressed when you send a book you have written – provided it’s about the relevant field. A book definitely separates you from the competition.

NEGATIVES. Writing a book is fine provided you have about a year’s worth of free time to devote to writing, editing, and publishing. It’s extremely time-consuming. There’s no guarantee your book will help you find clients.

 

Method #10. Public Relations.

HOW THIS WORKS. Nowadays, social media and public relations are close relatives. You try to get articles about you and your services published in magazines and on websites.

POSITIVES … You can gain a reputation plus get some “free” advertising. The publicity can look good on your website.

NEGATIVES. If you organize your own PR, then it’s going to take time and there’s no guarantee you’ll get any new clients. You’ll get better results if you hire a PR professional but they will charge around $3,000 a month.

 

Method #11. Job Boards on Facebook and Other Sites …

HOW THIS WORKS. Several people have set up job boards on Facebook and other social media platforms. Some organizations have job boards where you have to pay to get access. People who need copywriters will often post on these sites. Sometimes, an organization simply compiles or “aggregates” what they find on the Internet.

POSITIVES … You’ll find people who are looking for copywriters. Sometimes you’ll find legitimate companies with decent budgets.

NEGATIVES. Well over 97% of these opportunities will be terrible … organized by people who are clueless … with NO money.

 

THE BAD

 

Method #11. Speaking at Events.

HOW THIS WORKS. You speak at events, large or small. You might be part of a panel of experts OR you might be the only speaker, speaking for upwards of 2 hours.

POSITIVES … You can earn a fee PLUS you’re advertising to a group of strong potential clients. Several creative and marketing professionals have used this method to promote themselves. At some events, clients will be lining up to speak with you after your presentation.

NEGATIVES. It can take several years to get on the “circuit” and, initially, you will have to speak for free at “minor league” events. If you’re super-serious about this method, you will have to travel a TON to get the exposure you want … and this can cost thousands. You have to be extremely good at speaking in front of groups and you will have to spend hours putting together presentations.

 

Method #12. Cold Calling … Telemarketing.

HOW THIS WORKS. You find potential clients to call and you call them out of the blue.

POSITIVES … Extremely direct and aggressive. Aggressive is better than passive. It’s most effective when you call the clients you really want to work with. Almost nobody uses this method so it’s easy to stand out from the crowd.

NEGATIVES. It can quickly become soul-destroying, especially if you’re shy. This method can turn some clients off … quickly. You may have to get past an “administrative assistant” plus people rarely answer calls nowadays from people/numbers they don't know.

 

Method #13. Word of Mouth/Referrals.

HOW THIS WORKS. Clients and friends refer you to their clients and friends.

POSITIVES … Referrals are eager to discover more about you. Prospects are totally warmed up.

NEGATIVES. You might have heard, “word of mouth advertising is the best advertising on the planet.” But, based on my experience, word of mouth can be the WORST advertising on the planet. Here’s why.

I value referrals from my current clients and I thank them for these referrals … BUT … 99% of the time, the new potential clients are a poor fit. PLUS you cannot rely on this method to provide regular leads. It’s erratic at best. In many cases, there's a "boys club" of copywriters you have to get into. Good luck with that.

 

Method #14. Inbound Marketing … AKA Your Website.

HOW THIS WORKS. You build a solid web presence, optimize the site for the search engines, and – in theory – sit back and get tons of leads.

POSITIVES … Some leads are great potential clients.

NEGATIVES. If you Google the search term “Direct Response Copywriter” I'm on the first page in the organic search results. Take a look.

I rank on page 1 when you Google “direct response copywriter” … that’s good but it also means I get a lot of leads from bad clients.

To be fair, being #1 in organic search has brought me some great projects and some great clients. BUT … I have no idea how my site became #1. This position could end tomorrow if Google changes the algorithm.

And quite frankly, many of the people who contact me are NOT great potential clients. Worse … you’re going to have to work extremely hard to knock me off my perch … and there’s no guarantee your inbound marketing efforts will produce anything. Inbound marketing takes a TON of effort and time to organize. Plus you have to add content to your site regularly.

 

Method #15. Networking.

HOW THIS WORKS. You go to Chamber of Commerce events. You join professional groups. You shake a lot of hands and sip really bad wine as you try to meet good clients at after-work cocktail receptions.

POSITIVES … You can meet potential clients.

NEGATIVES. This takes a lot of time and energy. You need to speak at events to get the attention of the best clients. You also need to be brave … you will meet a lot of people selling insurance and real estate. You can waste a ton of time. It’s best if you’re part of the leadership of the group and this will take even more time.

 

Method #16. Trade Shows, Conferences, and Seminars.

HOW THIS WORKS. This marketing method involves visiting large and small events to meet potential clients.

POSITIVES … You can suddenly find yourself in a room full of strong potential clients. This can be a powerful way to put yourself in front of people who are looking for your services.

NEGATIVES. The cost. You will have to spend upwards of $5,000 to attend a single event. And while it can a strong way to meet potential clients, you will meet a lot of clients who aren’t good candidates.

 

Method #17. Social Media.

HOW THIS WORKS. You set up a presence on sites like Twitter and Facebook. You can mention you have bandwidth for projects.

POSITIVES … It’s trendy. And social media is still growing in scope. A lot of decision makers show up on social media sites.

NEGATIVES. You have to build a following. You can never be totally sure who will follow you … and what they really want/need. It's ultimately passive.

 

Method #18. Facebook Groups.

HOW THIS WORKS. You join a Facebook group and wait for marketers to ask for copywriters to contact them.

POSITIVES … I can't think of any. Really.

NEGATIVES. Really bad potential clients who are only interested in the lowest price. A feeding frenzy with 100 people trying to bid on projects. It's great for the person who organizes the group ... but really bad for you, the talented and ambitious copywriter who is looking for great clients.

 

Method #19. A Private Online Marketing Group/Private Job Boards.

HOW THIS WORKS. You join, at great expense, some type of copywriting group where you get instruction ... plus you get the promise: "we regularly have top marketers contacting us looking for copywriters." I'm sure you've seen this.

POSITIVES … Some of these marketers are the "real deal."

NEGATIVES. Some of these marketers are "not the real deal" plus it's competitive ... even in a so-called "private group" at least 10 other copywriters will contact the potential clients. It's not the worst method but it's certainly not the best.

 

Method #20. Full-Time Jobs That Pop Up on LinkedIn and Other Sites

HOW THIS WORKS. Jobs for copywriters show up on various websites.

POSITIVES … Some of these companies provide excellent opportunities.

NEGATIVES. It can be competitive. Sometimes, over 100 people will apply for one job. Plus the pay can be mediocre. Many of these companies don't really value the importance of a copywriter. They have a salary range that instantly limits your income.

 

 

THE GOOD: THE ONLY METHOD THAT REALLY WORKS

 

DIRECT MARKETING

HOW THIS WORKS. The most powerful and effective way to market yourself is to buy a database of strong potential clients and contact them directly. Eventually, you want to build your own database of potential clients but you need a database to get you going in the right direction.

POSITIVES … Very little competition. You pick the clients you think are the best fit for you and your copywriting practice. It's a proven method. You only need 3-5 new clients and you can generate tens of thousands in fees every month. You stop wasting time with the methods above and focus on your personal marketing.

FULL DISCLOSURE. You need some patience. You must be persistent (politely). You must know how to sell. You must have an organized sales system. You will face some rejection so you need a thick skin.
