POSITIVES ... NONE.

WHY IT STINKS. You set up a profile. You bid on assignments. You get to work with clients who are ONLY interested in one thing: PAYING AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE. So you quickly become a commodity. And with our 'friends' at Fiverr and other sites, you get paid $5 for writing copy. They are SCUM and must be avoided.

 

Method #2. Word of Mouth/Referrals

 

HOW THIS WORKS. Clients and friends refer you to their clients and friends.

POSITIVES ... Referrals are eager to discover more about you. Prospects are totally warmed up.

WHY IT STINKS. You might have heard, "word of mouth advertising is the best advertising on the planet." But, based on my experience, "word of mouth is the WORST advertising on the planet." Here's why.

I value referrals from my current clients and I thank them for these referrals ... BUT ... 99% of the time, the new potential clients are a poor fit. PLUS you cannot rely on this method to provide regular leads. It's erratic at best.

 

Method #3. Inbound Marketing ... AKA Your Website

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You build a solid web presence, optimize the site for the search engines, and - in theory - sit back and get tons of leads.

POSITIVES ... Some leads are great potential clients.

WHY IT STINKS. If you Google the search term "Direct Response Copywriter" I come first in the organic search results. Take a look.

I rank #1 when you Google "direct response copywriter" ... that's good but it also means I get a lot of leads from bad clients.

To be fair, being #1 in organic search has brought me some great projects and one superb client. BUT ... I have no idea how my site became #1. This position could end tomorrow if Google changes the algorithm.

And quite frankly, many of the people who contact me are NOT great potential clients. Worse ... you're going to have to work extremely hard to knock me off my perch ... and there's no guarantee your inbound marketing efforts will produce anything. Inbound marketing takes a TON of effort and time to organize. Plus you have to add content to your site regularly.

 

Method #4. Google AdWords and Pay Per Click

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You pay to rank above the organic search results or you even advertise on the display ad networks.

POSITIVES ... You CAN find decent leads and get awesome exposure. You can also get leads sent straight to your email inbox through Google Alerts.

WHY IT STINKS. I like Google Alerts and I found a great client using this method. But it's passive and you have to spend HOURS trolling through websites and classifieds looking for leads.

Google AdWords is a powerful tool but you MUST know what you're doing or you can quickly spend well over $10,000 for mediocre leads. To make the most of AdWords, you need to hire a consultant ... an expensive consultant.

Display ads are a good fit for business-to-consumer businesses looking for tens of thousands of customers. I'm not convinced it's a great method for creative freelancers.

 

Method #5. Major Job Sites Like Monster and Career Builder

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You place your resume on these sites and/or you respond to ads.

POSITIVES ... Recruiters who are looking for copywriters will often find you through these sites. This can lead to decent temporary gigs - sometimes.

WHY IT STINKS. You're going to have to deal with a recruiter who is simply trying to place as many people in jobs as quickly as possible. The gig might be good. The gig might be terrible. I tell everyone to make sure they have an up-to-date and keyword optimized resume on all the big job sites. But ... again ... it's PASSIVE and you're at the mercy of a head hunter.

 

Method #6. Trolling Sites Like Warrior Forum

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You cruise around message boards populated by Internet marketers and other direct response marketers.

POSITIVES ... You'll find some potential clients.

WHY IT STINKS. These sites are like the Wild Wild West. Anything can happen. You'll find plenty of clients with NO money ... but big reputations.

 

Method #7. The Latest and Greatest Websites Making Big-Time Promises They Can't Possibly Keep.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. Just about every week - it seems - someone sets up a website trying to link clients to creative types. Some sites are rudimentary. Others are slick.

POSITIVES ... You might find a client or two and you might get some SEO juice through links to your site.

WHY IT STINKS. These sites are notoriously unreliable. You can also waste several hours setting up elaborate profiles nobody will see.

 

Method #8. Crowdsourcing.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. Several websites provide potential clients with a service called "crowdsourcing." You basically produce creative work for free ... hoping the client chooses your work over the work of others. You are NEVER paid for the work that's not chosen.

POSITIVES ... NONE.

WHY IT STINKS. You could literally spend your entire career producing work nobody will pay for. The people who run crowdsourcing sites are the lowest form of pond scum who will happily rip off ambitious creative types. Avoid crowdsourcing at all costs.

 

Method #9. Classifieds and Aggregators.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. People who need copy will post classified ads on sites like Craigslist. Certain sites automatically collect all these classifieds and list them in a daily email.

POSITIVES ... There's a lot of opportunity.

WHY IT STINKS. A few of the potential clients are strong. But the vast majority of these classifieds are from clients who don't really know what they're doing. It can also be extremely competitive.

 

Method #10. Networking

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You go to Chamber of Commerce events. You join professional groups. You shake a lot of hands and sip really bad wine as you try to meet good clients at after-work cocktail receptions.

POSITIVES ... You can meet potential clients.

WHY IT STINKS. This takes a lot of time and energy. You need to speak at events to get the attention of the best clients. You also need to be brave ... you will meet a lot of people selling insurance and real estate. You can waste a ton of time. It's best if you're part of the leadership of the group and this will take even more time.

 

Method #11. Trade Shows, Conferences, and Seminars.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. This marketing method involves visiting large and small events to meet potential clients.

POSITIVES ... You can suddenly find yourself in a room full of strong potential clients. This can be a powerful way to put yourself in front of people who are looking for your services.

WHY IT STINKS. The cost. You will have to spend upwards of $5,000 to attend a single event. And while it can be a strong way to meet potential clients, you will meet a lot of clients who aren't good candidates.

HOW THIS WORKS. You set up a presence on sites like Twitter and Facebook. You can mention you have bandwidth.

POSITIVES ... It's trendy. And social media is growing in scope.

HOW THIS WORKS. You place ads - large or small - in trade publications.

POSITIVES ... You'll see plenty of creatives trying this approach and it can be somewhat targeted. You can also measure the results.

WHY IT STINKS. You might get some good leads but you'll get plenty of bad ones. Plus it can be expensive depending on the publication, the size of the ad, and the frequency. You'll spend anywhere from $150 to $1,000 a week.

 

Method #14. Writing a Book.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. To establish yourself as an expert, you can write and publish a book about your field of expertise.

POSITIVES ... Clients are generally impressed when you send a book you have written - provided it's about the relevant field. A book definitely separates you from the competition.

WHY IT STINKS. Writing a book is fine provided you have about a year's worth of free time to devote to writing, editing, and publishing. It's extremely time-consuming. There's no guarantee your book will help you find clients.

 

Method #15. Public Relations.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. Nowadays, social media and public relations are close relatives. You try to get articles about you and your services published in magazines and on websites.

POSITIVES ... You can gain a reputation plus get some "free" advertising. The publicity can look good on your website.

WHY IT STINKS. If you organize your own PR, then it's going to take time and there's no guarantee you'll get any new clients. You'll get better results if you hire a PR professional but they will demand upwards of $3,000 a month.

 

Method #16. Speaking at Events.

 

HOW THIS WORKS. You speak at events, large or small. You might be part of a panel of experts OR you might be the only speaker, speaking for upwards of 2 hours.
